Standards and Guidelines

Principles, Standards & Code of Best Practice (October 2019)

This document sets out the principles, standards and code of best practice that underpin good advocacy practice. It recognises that all independent advocacy organisations share the same principles. It has been developed to be used across Scotland, to ensure that independent advocacy is being delivered consistently and is of the highest possible standard.

Independent Advocacy Guide for Commissioners (2013)

This revised Guidance aims to capture the many developments since the publication of the original Guide to Commissioners in 2001 by the then Scottish Executive Health Department and the subsequent revision and publication by the Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance (SIAA) in 2010. Importantly it seeks to clarify Commissioners‘ statutory responsibilities under the Mental Health (Care & Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003.

Independent Advocacy: an Evaluation Framework (2010)

This document sets out a framework for evaluating advocacy practice. Advocacy organisations are encouraged to measure their practice using the self-evaluation tool. (Zipped folder)
