The SIAA are sponsoring the award for Service user participation and influence which will be voted for by the 160 attendees at the ceremony on Friday 18 March.
The awards shortlist:
Richmond Fellowship Scotland - FOCUS
Flourish House (Clubhouse)
Royal Edinburgh Hospital Self Harm ServIce / CAPS Personality Disorder Project
The Advisory Group (TAG) Key Community Supports
We think that individual participation in decisions that affect them is a
fundamental principle and one that should be at the heart of any health or
social care decision. The principles are clear that just because someone has a
mental illness, learning disability or other mental disorder, it doesn't mean
they have no say in what happens to them.Consideration of the principles and
individual needs should be at the heart of how services are planned and
delivered.
Also at the event Jo McFarlane has been invited to be the poet in residence (see some of her poetry in our A Voice Through Choice book) and a group from Oor Mad History will be speaking.

Call for Independent Advocacy to be available for all: Manifesto launch
The Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance (SIAA) are pleased to launch a Manifesto for Independent Advocacy and a campaign on behalf of Scotland’s Advocacy Movement calling for MSPs and prospective MSPs to ensure that Independent Advocacy is available for all who need it wherever they are in Scotland.
There are Independent Advocacy organisations all over Scotland, empowering people who need a stronger voice by enabling them to express their needs and make their own decisions. They help people engage with and become a part of their communities. Over many years collective advocacy groups have played a vital role in shaping services.
We are calling for the Scottish Government to ensure that Advocacy is Accessible, Diverse, Engaged and Sustainable find out more by downloading our Manifesto.

Stroke Advocacy Training Workshops
In recognition of the gap in independent advocacy provision for those affected by stroke, the Scottish Government made limited funding available to The Stroke Association to develop advocacy. Three established independent advocacy organisations were chosen to pilot a range of collective and individual advocacy approaches. A further peer advocacy pilot grew from a Stroke Association user involvement project.
In preparation for their work with those affected by stroke Advocacy Highland developed training for advocates designed around advocacy and stroke.
The SIAA and the Stroke Association Scotland are keen to disseminate the learning from this project and to encourage thinking around further development of independent advocacy for people affected by stroke.
Advocacy Highland will deliver three one day Advocacy and Stroke training workshops for paid staff and volunteers from advocacy organisations across Scotland. These workshops will be free to attend.
The dates and venues for these workshops are:
Raploch Community Campus, Stirling - 30th March 2011
Glasgow Centre for Inclusive living - 5th April 2011
Aberdeen Foyer – 5th May 2011
