SIAA NEWS

 

The Map of Advocacy Across Scotland 2007 – 2008 edition has been finalised and published on the SIAA website.  The document gives details of advocacy organisations, client groups, statistics and funding between April 2007 and March 2008.  It includes a comparison of advocacy funding between NHS areas.  Information was available from most advocacy organisations unfortunately we were unable to gather information from all organisations.  The map will be updated over the next few months and the 2008 – 2009 edition will be published in the autumn.  For more information click here.

Self-Directed Support Services

The Scottish Government commissioned the Scottish Council on Deafness (SCoD) to produce a DVD for deaf people explaining what Self –Directed Support Services are and how people can access them.  SCoD has a microsite on their website and the information available here is presented solely in BSL - http://www.scod.org.uk/sds/sds.html.  If you would like a copy of the DVD which also has a voice over and subtitles, contact SCoD on admin@scod.org.uk.  Telephone: 0141 248 1854.  Textphone: 0141 248 2477. See me – Scotland’s national campaign to end the stigma and discrimination associated with mental ill health have launched their second national ‘Hear Me 2’ survey which aims to gather detailed information about the ways in which stigma affects those with lived-experience of mental health problems.  The survey will run until the end of May 2009.  For more information and to complete the survey please see their website.

EVENTS

 

Equality and Human Rights in the Classroom

Schools in Scotland, whether they are Local Authority or Independent are now covered by laws forbidding discrimination against their pupils on the grounds of sex, race, disability, religion or belief and sexual orientation.  At the same time the issue of Human Rights in the classroom has never been so pertinent.  The Govan Law Centre is offering a seminar addressing the often complex and confusing field of equality and human rights legislation telling you what you must and must not do.  Topics will include; Checklist of Equality Duties; Anti-Homophobic bullying toolkit; Equality schemes and school development plans, Race Equality in Schools and Creating a Human Rights Culture in schools.  It will take place on Wednesday 3rd June, 1-4pm at the Pierce Institute in Govan at a cost of £75.00.  For more information please see their website.

The Role of Lifelong Learning in the Empowerment of Disabled Citizens” Glasgow Disability Alliance (GDA) Learning Festival & Elections Hustings 2009

CSL Consultancy

CSL Consultancy is running all day training courses on Assertiveness Skills and Dealing with Conflict.  The Assertiveness Skills courses are running on Thursday 18th June in Lochgilphead and on Tuesday 30th June in Glasgow.  The Dealing with Conflict course will take place on Monday 22nd June in Edinburgh.  The cost for these courses is £110.00.  For more information please see their website.       

 

CONSULTATION

 

Alzheimer Scotland: Words into Action on Dementia road show events and consultation.

Alzheimer Scotland is consulting widely on the development of a charter of rights for people with dementia and a mid-term Dementia Manifesto. We are inviting everyone with experience of dementia - people with a diagnosis, family members, friends, advocacy workers, health and social care professionals - to help inform these documents with their views and experiences. NHS Lothian and the City of Edinburgh Council

NHS Lothian in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council is seeking to jointly retender for the management and provision of effective governance of its individual and collective advocacy services in mental health at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. They would invite interested independent advocacy providers to contact Robert Bell in Procurement on 0131 537 9337 or e-mail robert.bell@luht.scot.nhs.uk for a copy of the tender documentation. Closing date for applying for the tender is Wednesday 3rd June 2009.

 

European Commission Proposal for an Equal Treatment Directive

On May 5th the government Equalities Office launched a consultation on the European Commission for an Equal Treatment Directive.  The directive prohibits discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief, disability, age and sexual orientation.  Much of this is contained either in current legislation or the new bill, but the government wishes to consult, in particular on those areas where proposals may be at a variance with the current and proposed law.  For more information check their website.

 

FUNDING

 

Information about funds available from the Equality and Human Rights Commission for agencies working on equality and human rights issues

The Commission recently announced a new £10.2 million Strategic Funding Programme, providing three-year project-based funding of up to £450,000 for community and voluntary sector organisations.  A first priority area will fund organisations providing guidance, advice and advocacy services in areas including education, health and employment, as well building capacity where there are gaps in local provision, for example for women who have experienced violence.  Full details, as well as guidance notes and the outline proposal form are available in a full range of accessible formats from the website.

 

Secret Millionaire Fund Launches
The BIG Lottery Fund has launched a new fund inspired by the Channel 4 show The Secret Millionaire.  Lottery funding worth £1m has been lined up to give away in grants across the UK and will support local projects that can have a big impact on people’s lives.  For more information on how to apply for funding of between £300 and £10,000 click here.
