GENERAL NEWS
More than 7,000 children in Scotland have been admitted to hospital over the last decade for deliberately harming themselves, new figures claim.
A further 160,000 people aged over 16 in such cases were also admitted between 1998 and 2009. Self-harm ranges from scratching and cutting the skin to poisoning, typically begins around 14, and peaks between 16 and 25. Around 150,000 people attend casualty departments each year in the UK because of self-harming, making it one of the top five causes of acute medical admission. The commonest form seen at A&E is self-poisoning by drugs. Those who self-harm are 100 times more likely than others to commit suicide within a year.
General Medical Council (GMC)
A new initiative has been launched to provide more support for those attending a General Medical Council (GMC) hearing into a doctor’s fitness to practise. An online hearing room allows patients, witnesses and doctors to take a virtual step inside a hearing. The site includes virtual versions of all those who might attend a hearing, such as lay and medical members of the panel. All 12 of these characters can be clicked on for an explanation of what role they play in a hearing. The site also shows the reception area and waiting rooms for witnesses and doctors so that anyone attending a hearing can arrive feeling more comfortable with their surroundings.
In addition, the GMC is launching a project to support vulnerable witnesses. This project allows witnesses to come into the GMC’s buildings in advance of the hearing and be shown around. They can also ask to be joined by an independent ‘friend,’ assigned on the day of the hearing, to provide support. The project builds on an existing section for witnesses on the GMC website with photos of the building and information about the processes which they can expect.
Alcohol Pricing
Scotland's largest brewer, Tennent's, has backed the Scottish Government's proposal for minimum pricing for alcohol. In a statement, Mike Lees, Managing Director of Tennent Caledonian Breweries, said he believed that minimum pricing was "part of the solution" to Scotland's £3.56 billion-per-year problem with alcohol misuse.
The support from Tennent's adds to a 'growing consensus' of opinion in favour of minimum pricing, including the four Chief Medical Officers of the UK, the BMA, the Royal Colleges, all 17 directors of public health in NHS Scotland, the House of Commons Health Select Committee, the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) and the Scottish Licensed Trade Association.
