SIAA NEWS

The SIAA launch event for the updated ‘Guide for Commissioners’ and the new ‘Evaluation Framework’.

The event will take place 3rd February 2010 at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, 10.00am to 2pm. This is a free event and everyone involved in the commissioning, funding, delivery, receiving and evaluation of independent advocacy is invited. It will be your opportunity to hear about the Government’s commitment to independent advocacy and influence the implementation of these much anticipated documents. Nil by mouth should be last resort according to Royal College of Physicians 

You may have seen the recent media attention given to the issue of tube feeding. The source of this is a  report published by the Royal College of Physicians in conjunction with the British Society of Gastroenterology. EVENTS

Social Work Inspection Agency: Practice Guides on Chronologies and Effective Management of Social Work Recording 

SWIA is to launch the first two practice guides in a planned series of guides for practitioners on 27 January 2010 at the Radisson Hotel, Glasgow.  This half-day event will commence at 10 am and finish after lunch. Speakers will include Alexis Jay, Chief Social Work Inspector and there will be opportunity for discussion. The guides are intended to be relevant to all front line staff and their managers working in the statutory, voluntary and private social work services sector.

Advocacy Conference: 15th & 16th March 2010 Birmingham

Action for Advocacy, Advonet, Age Concern Cymru, DAN, GAIN, and OPAAL will be hosting an Advocacy Conference: Shaping the Vision will be an action-focused event aimed at producing a vision for advocacy in the next decade. ‘Advocacy makes you feel brave’: advocacy support for children and young people in Scotland

This report presents the findings from a scoping study, by the Scottish Government, into advocacy support for children and young people in Scotland. It is published on the Scottish Government’s website at: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2010/01/07144331/0 and forms part of their response to the Concluding Observations, Do the Right Thing. The SIAA is currently putting together a response to this report and invites members to get in touch if you wish to comment.

Devolution’s impact on low incomes and places

What is the impact of devolution for people and places in poverty? For the tenth anniversary of devolution, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published a series of reports which explore trends in social and economic disadvantage as well as policy developments in four areas: housing and homelessness, employment, neighbourhood regeneration and long-term care for older people. The Third Sector - Discussions around key public policy issues

Despite the recession, charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations (the third sector) are still innovating, according to this publication from the Economic and Social Research Council. The report is the result of presentations and debates at a series of public policy seminars organised by the ESRC in collaboration with the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations and with support from the Scottish Government.
