GENERAL NEWS

 

European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion

2010 has been designated as the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.  The Poverty Alliance, and the other anti-poverty networks in the UK, is keen to highlight the wide range of activities that are taking place in the UK to address poverty and social exclusion.  They want to ensure that during the course of the European Year they are able to highlight those events and activities that raise the profile of poverty issues that involve people with experience of exclusion and that will leave a lasting legacy of good practice and knowledge.  For more information please see their website.

 

Scoping parents' views of the additional support needs framework in Scotland

The Additional Support Needs (ASN) framework has been in place in Scottish education since 2004 but how well is it working?  For Scotland's Disabled Children (FSDC) wants to know parents' views and experiences of the framework and its processes.  Most importantly, they want to know if disabled children and young people are getting the support they need and if that is making a difference to their experience at school.  For more information please see their website.

 

CHANGE

In 2007 CHANGE has published “You and Your Little Child 1-5”, the ultimate accessible resource for parents of small children.  Now, CHANGE is proud to present the “You and Your Little Child 1 -5”  Picture Bank.  This Picture Bank CD ROM is loaded with over a thousand images from the pages of the book and because this invaluable resource is from CHANGE, it couldn’t be easier to use.  If you work with parents with learning disabilities, parents who find reading hard or simply want to communicate in a manner accessible to everyone, you cannot afford to miss out on the “You and Your Little Child 1 – 5”  Picture Bank.  You can order your copy from the CHANGE website.

 

Record £28.6 million drugs funding

A record of £28.6 million funding for drug treatment services was announced by Minister for Community Safety Fergus Ewing.  The funding will go directly to NHS Health Boards for drug treatment services across Scotland. This money will help to fund recovery services which will be tailored to local needs.  It means the Scottish Government's commitment to increase investment in frontline drug services by 20 per cent has been met.  To read the full article please click here.

 

Scottish Government’s Guide for Parents

A guide to make parents aware of their responsibilities when it comes to their child's attendance at school has been published.  It comes as statistics show more pupils have a 100 per cent attendance record - up to 47,400 this year from 35,000 in 2007-2008.  Click here to read the full article.

 

EVENTS

 

Race Equality Conference

The Scottish Government is committed to working in partnership with stakeholders and communities to tackle racism and achieve race equality in Scotland.  They want Scotland to be a country where people can live, work and bring up their families without fear of discrimination.  This conference aims to discuss and debate with delegates where we are and where we need to be on delivering race equality nationally and locally.  The event is free and will be held on Tuesday 15th December 09 at The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre in Clydebank.  To book a place please contact Linda Bruce on 0131 474 9228 or e-mail her at Linda@cosla.gov.uk.      

 

The Global Politics of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Human Rights

NHSScotland Chief Executive’s Annual Report 2008/2009

The Annual Report for NHSScotland for 2008/2009 has now been published and can be found on the Scottish Government’s website.  The Report presents an assessment of the performance of NHSScotland in 2008/2009 and describes key achievements and challenges.

Big Lottery Fund Scotland £5m Recession Package

Existing grant holders specifically working with people and communities who are most in need during the recession can apply for this new fund.  The investment will target a number of areas including projects that provide support for families with a newly unemployed family member; family mediation; advice and counseling services for families; tenancy support projects; support to families affected by alcohol or substance misuse and practical assistance.  For more information please call the Big Lottery Fund enquiries line on 0870 240 2391 or visit their website.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and efficient Administrator (Maternity Cover, 9 months in the first instance) to join our team.  Your role will involve providing administrative support to the staff team.  The successful candidate will be experienced in the use of SAGE, have a good working knowledge of MS Office, an excellent telephone manner and be comfortable dealing with people.  You will have a positive attitude, a flexible approach to work, the ability to use your own initiative and work as part of a team.  The closing date for applications is 18th December 09.  For an application form and for a job specification please click here.
