GENERAL NEWS

 

Children’s Rights:  Improving the Lives of children in Scotland – The Scottish Government

The Scottish Government have completed work on the detailed annex that was initially sent out for consultation in December 2008.  This is the document that informed the content of Do the Right Thing.  It looks at each recommendation from the UN Committee as well as domestic concerns raised by NGOs and the Children’s Commissioners.  The Scottish Government has then offered a response on each issue and they have also included consultation responses on each issue.  The detailed annex can be accessed on the Scottish Government website here.

 

Scrutiny Bodies Project: health and care

The Public Services Reform Bill, which contains the provisions to establish the two new improvement and scrutiny bodies for healthcare and for social care and social work, was introduced to the Scottish Parliament, on 28 May 2009. Since then the Finance (lead), Health and Education Committees have been gathering evidence from stakeholders on the proposals to create the new scrutiny bodies.  The Health and Support Committee submitted its reports.  To read these please click here, here, here and here.

 

Highlands & Islands Equality Forum

The Equalities & Human Rights Commission (EHRC) commissioned the Highlands & Islands Equality Forum (HIEF) to develop a Scottish Rural Equalities Network (SREN) following learning from research into equalities issues in rural areas.  As part of their development of the SREN free events have been arranged in local areas, which aim to bring together local people to discuss equalities issues.  The seminars on Identity and Rural Equalities will take place at various locations and for more information please see their website.

 

EVENTS

 

SCVO: Building our Future

Policy makers are increasingly recognising the voluntary sector's contribution to building equalities and human rights in Scotland. This conference will provide space for the voluntary sector to articulate its own vision for building equalities in our society over the next 5 years, and to identify priority actions to deliver this.  This conference will take place on Wednesday 25th November 09, 10.15am at Glasgow City Chambers, George Square Glasgow, G2 1DU.  If you would like to book a place please contact Helen Swatton on 0141 225 8019. 

 

Positive Approaches to Autism

Association for Real Change is offering Positive Approaches to Autism training on 16th December 09 at their Eskbank, Midlothian office.  The course starts at 10am and finishes around 4pm and places cost £78 per person.  To book a place or for more information please contact Muriel Mcleod on 0131 663 4444 or e-mail her at muriel.mcleod@arcuk.org.uk.

 

CONSULTATION

 

New anti-bullying consultation announced

A new approach has been proposed to help tackle the bullying of young people across Scotland.  The Scottish Anti-Bullying Steering Group, the body promoting developments in anti-bullying work has drawn up plans for a new vision.  The Scottish Government is now, through a consultation paper, seeking views on the current strengths and best practices for anti-bullying in Scotland.  The consultation can be accessed on the Scottish Government’s website.  

 

FUNDING

 

Women’s Fund for Scotland

Grants of up to £5,000 are available for International Women’s Day 2010 events, or for other projects that benefit women run by not-for-profit groups.  Project funding is for between 25% to 100% of project costs and projects should support women’s development, self-sufficiency, economic and social equality and applications that incorporate social enterprises are of interest.  The deadline for applications is 11th December 09.  Please contact 0141 225 6670, e-mail grants@scottishcf.org or see their website.  

 

Choose Life Grants

Choose Life in Edinburgh is offering small grants of up to £3 000 for innovative projects and pieces of work to support the local strategy and action plan to prevent suicide within Edinburgh City.  Grant applications are welcomed to support any aspect of suicide intervention, prevention or postvention work.  The money can be used to offer support, raise awareness or to scope a piece of work to help identify if future interventions are required within a particular population, community or neighbourhood.  Applications are requested to be submitted to Sandra de Munoz at sandra.demunoz@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk or on 0131 537 6660 by Monday the 21st of December 2009.
