Creating a stronger information, advice and advocacy system for older people
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published a new paper which explores how the adult social care system can develop methods to ensure that older people are able to appropriate services. For more information please see their website.
PVG Implementation
On 10 November, the Scottish Government announced the fees for checks under the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme and published, in draft, the significant secondary legislation required to implement the Scheme for consultation. Also published for consultation is the draft guidance and a draft Regulatory Impact Assessment. The consultation will run until 2 February 2010. For more information see their website.
New plan to protect and promote human rights for all
On 10 November the Commission set out its three-year plan to preserve the rights in the Human Rights Act and to protect and promote respect for human rights principles. The Commission's strategy aims to create a climate of respect for human rights – through promoting accurate understanding, demonstrating the value of human rights law in people's everyday lives, helping public, private and voluntary organisations to translate the law into practical action, and using its legal powers. The development of social well-being in new extra care housing scheme
Extra care schemes help older people remain independent. But they also aim to provide social opportunities that prevent residents feeling isolated. For more information please click here.
Older people’s vision for long term care – highlighting what older people in care homes want and need.
How can we ensure a 'better life' for older people in residential and nursing care homes when their voices are rarely heard? A study published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation examined the experiences and aspirations of these older people and highlights their ambition to increasingly influence decisions about care, support and wider issues. CAPS – Personality Disorder Toolkit ‘Much More Than A Label’
CAPS have produced a draft Personality Disorder Toolkit ‘Much More Than a Label’ which is available to download on their website. The aim of this resource is to improve understanding and support for people with a diagnosis of personality disorder. Making Recovery Real – Scottish Recovery Network Roadshows
The Scottish Recovery Network (SRN) would like to invite you to attend one of their upcoming Making Recovery Real Roadshow events. These events will look at what recovery from mental health problems means for communities in Scotland; explore tools for recovery; and consider existing initiatives and the need for further action. The events are free to attend and will take place in Thurso on 1 December 2009, Oban on 24 February 2010, and Stranraer on 24 February 2010. The Poverty Alliance – Free Training
The Poverty Alliance are running a free training course entitled ‘Voices for Change, Creating Change’ on Wednesday, 9th and Friday 11th December 2009, in Glasgow. The training is aimed at individuals and groups that have experience of poverty issues and who want to get their voices and experiences heard more effectively in order to instigate change. Carers Rights Day Information Event
To mark Carers’ Rights Day on Friday 4th November, Renfrewshire Carers Centre and Reid Kerr College will be holding an Information Event for carers and their families and friends. The theme of the Day will be ‘protecting incomes and pensions’ and a number of organisations, including Advice Works, advocacy organisations, legal professionals, Job Centre Plus and Renfrewshire Council will be on hand to provide help and advice on your carer rights issues. SCVO – Making Human Rights Matter
Professor Alan Miller, Chair of the Scottish Human Rights Commission will give a 45 minute lecture entitled "Making Human Rights Matter". Members of the audience will have the chance to put questions to Professor Miller during a Q&A session. Following on from this there will be a Drinks Reception. This free event will take place on 25th November at 5.30pm at Glasgow City Chamber, George Square, Glasgow, G2 1DU and is open to all. For more information please see their website.

Calouste Gulkenkian Foundation
As part of its Ageing & Social Cohesion programme, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (CGF) is looking to award 20 projects up to £30,000 each to develop intergenerational pilot projects seeking to "Address a 21st Century Challenge". This stream of funding is looking to support projects that aim to improve social cohesion through three key strands; Environment, Migration and Intercultural issues, and Isolation and Loneliness.
