advocacy for older people
For organisations that work with older people - whether third sector or
statutory sector agencies - we can deliver presentations or training events
providing an introduction to independent advocacy for older people. These free
sessions are designed to explain what independent advocacy is; how it might
benefit older people; and how you might refer an older person you work with to

Save the Lloyds TSB Foundation in Scotland
The battle to save the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland has been taken to the doorstep of No.10. The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) has appealed directly to the Prime Minister to intervene to ensure the Lloyds Banking Group commits to retaining the foundation’s existing terms and conditions along with those of the other three UK foundations. Older people's advice service
A new welfare rights advice service for older people, backed by £700,000 from the Scottish Government, could benefit up to 22,000 people, it was announced. The Older People's Advice Service (OPAS) will target over 60s in the most deprived parts of Clackmannanshire, West Lothian and North Lanarkshire. The project aims to combat poverty and financial exclusion by improving take-up of older people's benefits with particular emphasis on clients who have health problems, are housebound, or who live in remote areas. Equal Communities in a Fairer Scotland: A Joint Statement
A joint statement by the Scottish Government and COSLA, 'Equal Communities in a Fairer Scotland', was published on October 29, 2009. The statement confirms the commitment of government at national and local level to tackling high levels of derivation in geographical communities. To read the full article please click here.

Seen and not Heard? Exploring issues facing young people living with long term conditions
This Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland event will consider three themes: transitions; school; and mental health and wellbeing. Speakers will include, Adam Ingram MSP, Minister for Children and Early Years and Chair, Professor Nick Watson, University of Glasgow. Listening to Children: Research and Consultation 2010
Listening to Children: Research and Consultation 2010 is an advanced training course designed for people who want to improve their skills in research and consultation with children and young people. The course involves a combination of online learning and classroom sessions covering a range of topics from creative methods to ethical issues and dissemination practices. They would be happy to discuss the course with any interested people. AdvoCard is an independent mental health advocacy charity in Edinburgh providing independent advocacy to people who have experience of mental health difficulties and mental ill health and who may be facing compulsory measures under the Mental Health (Care & Treatment)(Scotland) Act 2003. AdvoCard also offers independent advocacy to people around a wide range of issues that can affect a person’s life. Advocacy is provided to people in the community and in psychiatric hospital settings. You will provide leadership and overall management of the organisation ensuring that AdvoCard successfully develops and continues to deliver an excellent standard of service following the latest phase of expansion.
