FREE SIAA TRAINING
Introduction
to Elder Abuse
Free one day training for
independent advocates working with older people. This activity based training
covers the different types of elder abuse; contributory factors and reasons for
non-disclosure. It should provide a general introduction to elder abuse,
enabling independent advocates to identify actions and behaviours which are
abusive of older people. The dates for this training are 21st October
in Dundee and 28th October in Glasgow. For more information and to

Elder Abuse:
the Scottish Legal Context
Free one day training for
independent advocates working with older people providing an opportunity to
explore in detail key pieces of legislation. This training covers legislation
relating to adult protection; equality and human rights; mental health;
community care and health, and explores how such legislation can be used when
advocating for a person experiencing elder abuse. The dates for this training

In house elder
abuse training
Elder abuse training can be delivered in house for free to advocacy
organisations. Both the Introduction to Elder Abuse and Elder Abuse: the
Scottish Legal Context is available to be delivered in house. Alternatively,
elder abuse training can be designed specifically to your requirements. Shorter
training sessions can be delivered at team meetings for example or
presentations at AGMs. Please contact Vincent Finney, Elder Abuse Development

Misuse of
anti-psychotic medication – free training workshop for advocates working with
older people
Places are going fast for the free workshop for advocates working with older
people exploring issues around the misuse of anti-psychotic medication. This
one day event will be facilitated by an expert in the field on Thursday 26th

The CAPS Personality Disorder Project Goes Live and Online
The CAPS Personality Disorder Project has been set up to consult with people who have experience of personality disorder. Some people won’t want to speak about their experience face-to-face, so they have drawn up a written questionnaire as well. The information will be used to develop a resource for workers written by service users and aims to improve understanding and support for people with a diagnosis of personality disorder. Action Plan on Children's Rights
One of UN's top children's rights representatives, Professor Lothar Krappmann, will join Scotland's Children's Minister, Adam Ingram, at St Mary's School in Leith in Edinburgh to launch the Scottish Government's action plan on children's rights, 'Do the Right Thing'. Amnesty International Demand Dignity Campaign & Inclusion Scotland
Amnesty International's Demand Dignity campaign in Scotland is being launched soon and the new campaign will highlight the way that poverty and human rights violations often go hand in hand. Inclusion Scotland is keen to hear what dignity means to you! They will take the views of disabled people in Scotland to Amnesty International to ensure that they are included in the campaign. Voices for Change, Creating Change: Free Poverty Alliance Training
Do you feel that there is a need for change in the communities where we live and across Scotland in general? Have you ever had something to say on an issue but didn’t know who was best to say it to? Do you want to join with others to work for real change in your community? If the answers are yes, then this training is for you! The training is aimed at individuals who have direct experience of issues that result from living a life on low income. It is also suitable for organisations that support and work with communities and want to do more to address poverty by working together. The training will take place on Monday 5th and Thursday 8th October in Fife. The Identity and Rural Equalities Seminars
There will be various seminars on Identity and Rural Equalities throughout various locations in Scotland. This seminar will look at the way we form multi-layered identities and what our local rural identity might look and feel like. Through a better understanding of this, we can then explore who we include and exclude and how this links to the issues of identity, stereotyping and discrimination. These seminars are held from 9.30 - 13.00pm and include lunch. For more information please click here.
Beyond 2010: Ensuring a Lasting Legacy for the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion
Did you know that
2010 has been designated as European Year for Combating Poverty and
Social Exclusion? The European Year will be an opportunity to create new
momentum for action to fight poverty in Scotland and across the EU. This
seminar will be an opportunity to hear from the UK and Scottish Governments,
the European Commission and the European Anti-Poverty Network about their plans
for the year, and how you can be involved. This event will be held on Friday
25 September 2009, 9.30am – 1pm in the City Chambers, Edinburgh. For more

FBS are looking to recruit and advocacy worker to provide professional advocacy and group support to children and young people with a wide range of disabilities and support needs. Flexible working is required, with some evening and weekend work. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and experience (paid or unpaid) in advocacy. This position is based in Coatbridge and the salary is £20,388 to £21,036 (SJC Scale AP3, Pts 23/24). The closing date is Wednesday 23rd September.
