Introduction
to Elder Abuse
Free one day training for
independent advocates working with older people. This activity based training
covers the different types of elder abuse; contributory factors and reasons for
non-disclosure. It should provide a general introduction to elder abuse,
enabling independent advocates to identify actions and behaviours which are
abusive of older people. The dates for this training are 21st October
in Dundee and 28th October in Glasgow. For more information and to

Elder Abuse:
the Scottish Legal Context
Free one day training for
independent advocates working with older people providing an opportunity to
explore in detail key pieces of legislation. This training covers legislation
relating to adult protection; equality and human rights; mental health;
community care and health, and explores how such legislation can be used when
advocating for a person experiencing elder abuse. The dates for this training

In house elder
abuse training
Elder abuse training can be delivered in house for free to advocacy
organisations. Both the Introduction to Elder Abuse and Elder Abuse: the
Scottish Legal Context is available to be delivered in house. Alternatively,
elder abuse training can be designed specifically to your requirements. Shorter
training sessions can be delivered at team meetings for example or
presentations at AGMs. Please contact Vincent Finney, Elder Abuse Development

Misuse of
anti-psychotic medication – free training workshop for advocates working with
older people
Places are going fast for the free workshop for advocates working with older
people exploring issues around the misuse of anti-psychotic medication. This
one day event will be facilitated by an expert in the field on Thursday 26th

EVENTS
Caring about Equality Conference
This conference is about how public, private and voluntary organisations can respond to the new legal prohibition of discrimination against carers. The Equality Bill sets out a new legal framework for employers, providers, commissioners and procurers of services and goods and will herald the single biggest shift in legislation to affect carers in the last decade. This conference is a must-attend event for anyone working with service users, patients and carers including health and social care policy managers, equality officers, cares’ leads, carers centre staff, carers development workers and voluntary organisations who work with carers. The conference takes place on Wednesday 25th November 09 in London. For more information please see their website.
Glasgow Anti Racist Alliance
GARA is pleased to announce a series of free half-day seminars (from 12.30pm to 4.30pm) across Scotland to reflect on recent human rights developments and to seize Opportunities to influence the human rights agenda at the UN on race discrimination. The seminars will be held on Monday 28th September in Edinburgh, Monday 5th October in Glasgow and Tuesday 13th October in Inverness. West of Scotland Regional Equality Council
WSREC is offering free training on equality and diversity for the third sector organisation working in the area of the West of Scotland. The course covers six equality strands (age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation). This training is provided as a part of the Connecting to Communities (C2C) project, which aims to increase awareness of the community planning and equality among the minority ethnic groups in the West of Scotland. By raising awareness on equality issues this course aims to promote diversity and to offer support to ME communities suffering from multiple discrimination. The Involvement of Disabled Parents in their Children’s Education Seminar
Children
do better at school when parents are involved in their education. Across the UK, legislation and policy has been introduced to strengthen parental participation. This includes the Scottish Schools
(Parental Involvement) Act 2006, which requires education authorities to promote parental participation by providing information, encouraging support at home and creating opportunities for parents to help at school. This seminar is for educational professionals, policy makers and voluntary sector staff, interested in parental involvements and how barriers faced by disabled parents can be removed. The seminar will enable attendees to engage with the research findings, provide an opportunity for reflection on professional and institutional practice, and enable discussion of the issues the study. Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Migrants & EU Nationals- Rights, Recognition, Responsibilities and Action:
Positive Action in Housing is holding this event on Wednesday 30th
September and will inform you of your organisation’s responsibilities towards Scotland’s new communities. It covers the rights of new migrant communities in the areas of employment, housing, benefits and homelessness assistance. Course materials include practical information and contacts. FUNDING
The Co-operative Community Fund
Community Fund grants, between £100 and £2,000 are awarded to community, voluntary, or self-help groups to run projects that meet the following criteria. To be successful a group must carry out positive work in the community and their project must:
· address a community issue
· provide a good long-term benefit to the community
· support co-operative values and principles
· ideally be innovative in its approach

The Cruden Foundation Grants Programme offers support to registered charities operating in Scotland, who run activities that can bring benefit to communities in Scotland.
