FREE SIAA TRAINING

 

Introduction to Elder Abuse
Free one day training for independent advocates working with older people. This activity based training covers the different types of elder abuse; contributory factors and reasons for non-disclosure. It should provide a general introduction to elder abuse, enabling independent advocates to identify actions and behaviours which are abusive of older people.  The dates for this training are 21st October in Dundee and 28th October in Glasgow.

 

Elder Abuse: the Scottish Legal Context
Free one day training for independent advocates working with older people providing an opportunity to explore in detail key pieces of legislation. This training covers legislation relating to adult protection; equality and human rights; mental health; community care and health, and explores how such legislation can be used when advocating for a person experiencing elder abuse.  The dates for this training are 11th November in Dundee and 18th November in Glasgow.   

In house elder abuse training
Elder abuse training can be delivered in house for free to advocacy organisations. Both the Introduction to Elder Abuse and Elder Abuse: the Scottish Legal Context is available to be delivered in house. Alternatively, elder abuse training can be designed specifically to your requirements. Shorter training sessions can be delivered at team meetings for example or presentations at AGMs. Please contact Vincent Finney, Elder Abuse Development Officer, for more information and to discuss your requirements at vfinney@siaa.org.uk

 

Misuse of anti-psychotic medication – free training workshop for advocates working with older people
Places are going fast for the free workshop for advocates working with older people exploring issues around the misuse of anti-psychotic medication. This one day event will be facilitated by an expert in the field on Thursday 26th November in Glasgow. Human Rights and Older People Training

Places are going fast for The British Institute of Human Rights training on human rights and older people for independent advocates.  Participants should be experienced advocates who work with older people and have at least some basic knowledge of the Human Rights Act.  The training is free and will take place in Glasgow on 15th September from 10am until 4.30pm.  To book a place e-mail enquiry@siaa.org.uk or telephone 0131 260 5380 to request a booking form.  If you are interested in this training but are unable to travel to Glasgow for it, then please get in touch with Vincent Finney, Elder Abuse Development Officer, at vfinney@siaa.org.uk. If there is sufficient demand, it might be possible to organise this training in other parts of Scotland.    

 

GENERAL NEWS

 

The General Medical Council - Good Medical Practice in Action

The GMC has launched a new series of online tutorials that tackle ethically challenging scenarios.  The tutorials, which include cases involving child protection, whistle blowing and addiction have been added to those already featured on GMP in Action, the GMC’s interactive learning website.  This popular online resource explores common real-life medical and ethical dilemmas and explains how doctors should tackle the issues using the core GMC guidance, Good Medical Practice (GMP). EVENTS

 

United We Stand

Peer Support in Fife is delighted to have received funding from Scottish Community Foundation to hold this event for mental health service users and carers on Wednesday 14 October 2009 in Elmwood College in Cupar.  There will be a choice of workshops in the morning and afternoon, facilitated by a variety of guest projects and organisations that inform, involve and support users/carers to have a voice and make a difference in their own lives and beyond.  Attendance is free and includes lunch and refreshments.   Booking forms and a programme will be available shortly with priority given to users and carers.  For more information please telephone Chrys Muirhead on 01334 656 341. 

 

LGBT Youth National Gathering 2009

LGBT Youth will be holding a three day event which is all about Alternatives.  Over the weekend delegates get the chance to try a whole range of different activities and learn new skills.  The gathering will take place on 11th – 13th September and to find out more about this please see their website.

 

PUBLICATIONS

 

Poverty and Inequality in Scotland

This publication supersedes 'Scottish Households Below Average Income 2006-07' which was published in June 2008. It presents annual estimates of the proportion and number of children, working age adults and pensioners living in low income households in Scotland and the distribution of household income across Scotland.  To read the full article please click here.

 

Mental Welfare Commission

This report presents their findings from visits and interviews with people receiving care and treatment in low and medium secure mental health wards across Scotland.  They visited people in these services as part of our duty to monitor the care and treatment of people under the Mental Health (Care & Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003.  To read the full report please see their website.

Highland Carers – Advocacy Caseworker, East Ross

Pro rata SJC Scale AP3, Pts 23-26 (£20,388 - £22,371), 20 hours a week.

Highland Carers Advocacy provides individual advocacy support to carers across Highland through both paid advocates and volunteers and is looking to recruit an advocacy caseworker.  Applicants must have excellent communication skills with experience (paid or unpaid) of the provision of advocacy, information or advice.  Knowledge of the issues affecting carers would be an advantage.  Access to own transport and the ability to work flexibly is essential.  Closing date is noon on Friday 4/9/09; Interviews 16/9/09.  Informal enquiries can be made to Anita Evans on 01349 856776 or 07501 254035.
