SIAA NEWS

 

SIAA AGM Thursday 27th August 2009.

The 2009 SIAA AGM is taking place on 27th August 09 in Perth at the Salutation Hotel.  Tea and coffee will be available from 10.00 and the AGM will start at 10.30. Following the AGM we will be further debating how to improve the quality of advocacy in Scotland. Anyone interested or involved in advocacy is welcome to attend.  If you do wish to come along then please email us at enquiry@siaa.org.uk or telephone us on 0131 260 5380. The deadline for registration is 5pm Monday 24th August.  

 

FREE SIAA TRAINING

 

Introduction to Elder Abuse
Free one day training for independent advocates working with older people. This activity based training covers the different types of elder abuse; contributory factors and reasons for non-disclosure. It should provide a general introduction to elder abuse, enabling independent advocates to identify actions and behaviours which are abusive of older people.  The dates for this training are 21st October in Dundee and 28th October in Glasgow.

 

Elder Abuse: the Scottish Legal Context
Free one day training for independent advocates working with older people providing an opportunity to explore in detail key pieces of legislation. This training covers legislation relating to adult protection; equality and human rights; mental health; community care and health, and explores how such legislation can be used when advocating for a person experiencing elder abuse.  The dates for this training are 11th November in Dundee and 18th November in Glasgow.   

In house elder abuse training
Elder abuse training can be delivered in house for free to advocacy organisations. Both the Introduction to Elder Abuse and Elder Abuse: the Scottish Legal Context is available to be delivered in house. Alternatively, elder abuse training can be designed specifically to your requirements. Shorter training sessions can be delivered at team meetings for example or presentations at AGMs. Please contact Vincent Finney, Elder Abuse Development Officer, for more information and to discuss your requirements at vfinney@siaa.org.uk

 

Misuse of anti-psychotic medication – free training workshop for advocates working with older people
Advocates working with older people are invited to attend a free training workshop, exploring issues around the misuse of anti-psychotic medication. This one day event will be facilitated by an expert in the field on Thursday 26th November in Glasgow. Human Rights and Older People Training

Places are going fast for The British Institute of Human Rights training on human rights and older people for independent advocates.  Participants should be experienced advocates who work with older people and have at least some basic knowledge of the Human Rights Act.  The training is free and will take place in Glasgow on 15th September from 10am until 4.30pm.  To book a place e-mail enquiry@siaa.org.uk or telephone 0131 260 5380 to request a booking form.  If you are interested in this training but are unable to travel to Glasgow for it, then please get in touch with Vincent Finney, Elder Abuse Development Officer, at vfinney@siaa.org.uk. If there is sufficient demand, it might be possible to organise this training in other parts of Scotland.

ESRC/ University of Edinburgh Business School, ACOSVO and SOLACE Scotland Public Policy Seminar

The Involvement of Disabled Parents in their Children’s Education

Children do better at school when parents are involved in their education. Across the UK, legislation and policy has been introduced to strengthen parental participation.  This seminar is being held on Thursday 1st October and is aimed at educational professionals, policy makers and voluntary sector staff interested in parental involvements and how barriers faced by disabled parents can be removed.  To book your place or require more information please e-mail richard.brunner@strath.ac.uk.   

 

Scottish Women’s Aid Conference - Paying the Price: The Social and Economic Cost of Domestic Abuse.

Poverty and Inequality in Scotland
