SIAA NEWS
SIAA Board
Paul Thomas has stood down from his position as Treasurer of the SIAA and will no longer serve on the Board of Directors. We wish to extend to Paul our sincere and deep gratitude for his commitment and boundless energy. Billy Forbes is now the Treasurer of the SIAA and will be supported in his role by Dennis McGinngal, Vice-Chair and Damian Sherwood, Chair. We wish Billy every success in his new role.
As has been announced, the SIAA AGM will be taking place on 27 August, at which the election of the new Board will be held. By becoming a Director, members of the SIAA have an opportunity to participate in the development of the organisation and in shaping its vision. It is vital for the continued success of the SIAA that more Directors are appointed and therefore the current Board would urge members to give meaningful consideration to standing as a Director."
SIAA & the Scottish Government Drugs Policy Unit
The SIAA and the Scottish Government Drugs Policy Unit are considering how to develop advocacy for people with drug problems. The Drugs Policy Unit is keen to ensure access to advocacy for people with drug problems. In order to do this we need to understand what is available at the moment and what barriers there might be for this group. We have sent out a short questionnaire to advocacy organisations which we hope will enable us to gather this information. We are also looking for organisations that would be willing to take part in a 6 month research project to gather data on access to and use of advocacy for people with drug problems. In addition to this research, we are seeking organisations that would be willing to conduct some awareness, raising on advocacy to agencies working with people with drug problems in their area. If your organisation has not received the questionnaire, if you would prefer an electronic version or if you would be willing to take part in the research or awareness raising activities please contact Muriel on 0131 260 5380, mmowat@siaa.org.uk

NHS Complaints and Feedback report published
The Scottish Health Council is pleased to inform you of the publication of their report, Making It Better: Complaints and Feedback from Patients and Carers about NHS Services in Scotland. The report is available to download in PDF format from their website. As well as providing an interesting picture of people’s experiences of NHS complaints and feedback in Scotland, this research contains important messages and recommendations about how systems for gathering and using complaints and feedback can be improved and strengthened. They hope that the report will lead to discussion and, more importantly, action, to ensure that people across Scotland have a range of clear and accessible options to enable them to give their views on NHS services, and that they can be confident that those views will be handled appropriately and used effectively to make positive changes.
