GENERAL NEWS
Full of Life campaign for Older People’s Day 2009
The Full of Life campaign for UK Older People’s Day 2009 is looking for inspiring stories of older people who challenge stereotypes about what ‘old age’ means. These stories may be featured on the Full of Life pages online, or used in the national and regional media. Do you know about people aged 65 and over who are influential or inspirational in some way, and who would make a person reading about them think twice about older people? To suggest someone you know, call Full of Life on 020 7255 1100 or email: fulloflife@uk.grayling.com
Glasgow Disability Alliance (GDA)
Two videos from the GDA are now online - about the work of the GDA and the role of learning in empowering disabled people: http://enf.org.uk/blog/?p=912 and http://enf.org.uk/blog/?p=911.

PUBLICATIONS
Money Matters
The Mental Welfare Commission has a major role in monitoring and safeguarding the health and welfare of those who lack capacity due to a learning disability, dementia, mental illness or other mental disorder. A new guide entitled ‘Money Matters’ has been produced by the Commission, in consultation with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), because of our concerns about the impact of financial management on the welfare of those who lack capacity. They regularly meet individuals whose quality of life could be significantly enhanced by effective management of their funds. Management of an adult’s finances can be an integral part of providing for their health and welfare. To read the ‘Money Matters’ guide please click here.
Greater expectations – revisited
The Mental Welfare Commission has just completed its report from themed visits to people with severe and enduring mental illness. The report focuses on the care and treatment of individuals in rehabilitation and continuing care wards across Scotland and revisits some of the key themes identified in the Commission’s 2003 report - ‘Greater Expectations’. The 2008 ‘revisit’ finds progress in relation to some of the issues. One of the most striking findings however is the increase in concern about personal safety on wards. Half of the people interviewed on wards described either experience or fear of aggression, verbal and physical abuse. Fewer than half of these individuals said they had received help from staff to deal with the problem. Staff, who found they working in wards where individuals with widely different needs had been admitted, reported difficulties in maintaining their focus on individual recovery and discharge preparation. Click here for a full copy of the report.
Supporting People with Long-Term Conditions to Self Manage: An Essential Guide to Multi-Agency Knowledge and Skills
This self management guide was recently published by the SE LTC Partnership Project. It identifies the core knowledge, skills and competencies that enable professionals to support individuals to manage their condition, and aims to signpost to current policy, learning material and frameworks. This guide will support career progression, role re-design and service improvement. For a copy of the guide, contact Maureen Polson on 07825 119366 or at maureenpolson@nhs.net.

· Thursday 25th June 9.30am - 4pm Caledonian Hilton, Edinburgh;

In the Better Health Better Care: Action Plan, Scottish Government made a commitment to the development of a Participation Standard. The Scottish Health Council is working in partnership with Scottish Government and NHS Quality Improvement Scotland to develop a draft standard for consultation. In doing this we are involving NHS Boards along with voluntary and public representatives. This draft standard will be available on the Scottish Health Council website by the middle of June 2009. .We need your input at our consultation events to help us strengthen and improve the standard that will influence the quality of participation for patients, carers and communities in future. Places at the events are limited and to help us ensure broad representation and a good balance between members of the public, staff and voluntary organisations, please request and return a booking form by 12 June , contact Linda Young at linda.young@scottishhealthcouncil.org or Linda Young, Events and Publicity Officer, Scottish Health Council, 4th Floor, 50 West Nile Street, Glasgow G1 2NP.
